Pin it & Spin it: Homemade Twinkies

As impressionable as I am, I found myself suddenly craving Twinkies a few weeks ago after all that talk about Hostess filing bankruptcy.  I couldn’t afford to take to eBay to purchase a twenty dollar box of the tasty treats so I did what every crafty hungry girl would do;  I perused Pinterest.  There are a plethora of homemade Twinkie recipes out there.

I’m not even sure I pinned this recipe since I can’t seem to find the pin.  Nevertheless, homemade Twinkies were made.

The comes from Coconut and Lime.}

The spin?  No spinning this time.  I was hoping for a delicious copycat recipe so I followed the recipe as written.  Also, I should note:  I’ve owned this Twinkie pan {from Williams Sonoma} for, oh, about twelve years and haven’t ever used it until now.  Yea.  Craziness, I know.

The verdict:  Not great.  Or, not good at all.  I didn’t even finish the one I started to eat.  And, I just now {like 2 or 3 weeks after baking} threw them away {they hadn’t even started to mold?}. 

The sponge {wasn’t all that spongy} cake was dense and flavorless and the filling was just not good.  I’d never had a sweet cream/fluff filling start with a milk and flour roux as the base.  It just wasn’t good.

I guess it’s back to the pinning board I go.  I must get my money’s worth for the pan, after all.

My Glourious Triumphant Return

Aaaaand, I’m back.  That was a nice little break where I accomplished- not a lot.  It was nice not worrying about this little space.  I did continue reading my fave blogs and I perused Facebook every now and then, but for the most part, my time was spent taking care of Thom after a second surgery and some drainage issues.  Hopefully, those issues are behind us and we can get over this rough patch.

I’ll make this glorious triumphant return short and sweet with a Currently update:

Digging: Longer afternoon hours and some morning lightness before hiding in my office for the work day.

Drinking:  TOO MUCH soda and not enough coffee.  Seriously.  We haven’t replaced Darth Vadar yet.

Eating:  Veggie dogs and cream cheese frosting.  Not simultaneously.

Listening:  Thom’s brushing his teeth at the moment so I guess I’m listening to gurgling and running water.

Wearing:  Sweater {Lane Bryant}  Blue Jeans {thrifted} black trouser socks {oh, the horror.  I loathe black socks}

Reading:  The Next Best Thing by Jennifer Weiner

Feeling:  Cold.  Bummed because I have to work all weekend instead of being able to flea/thrift/antique for wedding props.

Weather:  TOO COLD for my liking.  And-not enough sunshine.

Wanting:  To have my house my house instantly organized, groceries bought and put away, and the craft room cleaned.

Needing:  To get the aforementioned “stuff” done and stop whining about it.

Wishing:  For an Italian vacation getaway.

Thinking: About wedding stuff!  Constantly.

Enjoying:  Valentine Candy from the mister.

Loving:  The promise of Spring soon!

A Break.

The moment was meant to come, friends.  I’m stepping away from social media and my space here-just for a bit.  I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed with life at the moment and I really feel like I just need some time away.

Currently

…Sitting in a dark house with the radio humming quietly.  There are cutaways frequently because the weather outside is frightful-not snow, but thunderstorms, high winds, tornados.  I joked on Facebook about enjoying fresh guac and salsa for dinner and listening to the heavy rain beat against the house and how it made for a lovely summer evening-except it’s still January.  I’ll take it, though.  It’s broken up the boring dreary days of the new year quite nicely.

…I’m in sort of a work crisis at the moment.  I dread getting up every single day to make the hour trek to a job that I’m not loving at the moment.  Currently trying to motivate myself into loving it, or liking it more at least. I often feel as if I’m not being challenged enough yet not wanting to be challenged because what does it matter if I’m hating it anyway?  Does that make any sense?  I just feel like I need to be doing something else to be happier…but I don’t know what that something else is.

…bored. bored. bored.  And, boring.

Pin it & Spin it: Cheesy Vegetable Chowder

I was perusing my Pinterest boards yesterday and Thom walked past as I was looking through Soup’s On.  He wondered out loud why I’m always complaining that I can never decide what to make for dinner. Good point.

The Pin:  Cheesy Vegetable Chowder from Lulu the Baker.

The Spin:  Added 1 1/2 cups frozen corn, extra garlic, cayenne for some kick, and white pepper.

The Verdict:  Quick, easy, delicious. Definitely a will-make-again recipe.  Get the recipe here.
