This DIY Patriotic Paper Straw Necklace is so much fun to make. Â AND it’s made with leftover supplies from previous projects, like my patriotic flameless torches (which are also SUPER fun to make). I even dug out some red jingle bells and plastic star doodads from my Christmas craft supplies to use with this necklace. I love when supplies can be used for multiple occasions!

Another thing I love about this necklace is that it’s so easy for little kids to do. Other than threading the needle, they can probably do this whole project in no time. Let’s get started!
Patriotic Paper Straw Necklace
Supplies to gather:
- Red embroidery thread (or any kind of cord that can be tied off.
- Patriotic Paper Straws (cut into 1 inch {ish} pieces)
- Red, white, and blue pom poms
- Star confetti
- Any other patriotic doodad you can find!
Tools:Â
- Needle
- Scissor
Method:Â
- Unwind desired length of thread. See notes below for tips.
- Thread embroidery thread through the needle and tie off.
- Start by pushing the needle through a pom pom. This will be the end part and keep all the other parts from sliding off.
- Thread patriotic doodads randomly. I threaded a pom pom, straw piece, star confetti (up to three stars for dimension), another straw piece, and a jingle bell, and so on.
- Add as many doodads as will fill up your length of embroidery thread. End with a straw so you can hide the tied off portion.
- Tie the ends together and slide a paper straw piece over the tied string.
Notes for Making a Patriotic Paper Straw Necklace
- If you have multiple people making necklaces, measure the desired length around each person’s neck before cutting the thread. This will ensure you make it long enough. Remember, you can always shorten but it’s more difficult to lengthen.
- Anything that can be pierced with a needle can be used for a patriotic paper straw necklace, as long as it’s not too heavy for your string.
I’d love to know if you make these! You can leave a comment below or, as always, join in the conversation over at my Desperately Seeking: Inspiration for Creative Living Facebook page.
