I’ve been ruminating over the release of this play-disguised-as-a-book for a couple of months now. I admit, I was torn over whether or not I would read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child; like every other Harry Potter fan, I am hungry for more Harry, Hermione, and of course, Ron but not so much so that I’ll settle for less than the best.
And, the best would be in J.K.’s own voice. Seeing her name there, larger and above the others, just doesn’t convince me that this is her work; her words. After all, to me, she is Harry, Hermione, and Ron.
For that reason, I just can not bring myself to read Cursed Child.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Whose Work Is It Really?
I’ve been digging around the interwebs to figure out just how much J.K. was a part of this project. Did she help conceive the story line? Were any of the words spoken by the actors her words? I can’t find a thing and since she is billed as the “original story” does that mean she is just given credit for making up the characters? I have a feeling that is the case. The whole project has a fan fiction vibe for me and while I encourage fan fiction as a way for people to practice and hone their own writing skills, I just can not bring myself to read much of it.
It’s been difficult, for sure. I do love a good bandwagon party, you know. Every time one of my Insta friends posts about their books or that they’re reading Cursed Child, I feel a bit of longing for my old Hogwarts friends. I hate missing out but I hate disappointment more and some of my blogging pals have expressed their own disappointment, too. Perhaps I’ll borrow from the library at some point. I mean, I do consider myself a fair person and I should at least, maybe, give it a shot?
What I Am Reading This Fall
Pottermore Presents just released a set of eBooks; short stories by Rowling about Hogwarts. These are stories previously published on the Pottermore. I love that they are easily accessible in eBook format for easy, anytime reading and I happily paid the low price of 2.99 per book to be able to do so.
I’m also SO looking forward to another Wizarding World movie and the release of Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them. I have that book around here somewhere and I’ll dig that out and give it another read before the release. I love fall. I love wizards. I love movies; wrapping them all in one magical bow very, very soon.
What are you looking forward to this fall? Have you read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child? What are your thoughts on this Potter matter? Tell me in the comments below or join in the conversation over on the Desperately Seeking Gina Facebook page.

I don’t want to read it either. I appreciate a book with a good ending and I feel like the series had one. I don’t want that messed up. I’m pro spoilers so I’ve read some articles with critical details about it and I’m not thrilled. So, not now but maybe later I will read it but probably not.
