Planting a succulent pot is one of the very first things I did as a beginning succulent gardener. Succulents are a great for a beginner gardener because you can plant ’em and forget ’em, for the most part.

I love Spring. I feel like I’m awakening after a long winter’s nap and it’s time to get up, get out, and get dirty. Or, at least, watch as Thom gets his hands dirty while planting my succulents. I’ve been wanting to put together a succulent fairy garden for a few years and when I found the perfect pot at our local nursery/herb store, Ozark Country Market, I knew this would be the perfect time to do it.
I spent a lot of time picking out succulents that I loved from the Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, and Ozark Country Market. I tried to pick out different varieties, ones with blooms, ones that would grow to different heights.
Planting a Succulent Pot
Here’s what I have:
- Crassula rupestris
- Cactus Moon Grafted/Hibotan
- Straw flower cactus/Mini Cholla/Cyliandro Puntia
- Gasteraloe
- Kalanchoe/Blossfeldiana Hybrid
- Exotic Angel
- Golden Barrel/Echinocactus Grusonii
- Hens & Chicks
- Portulacaria Afra Variegata
- Sedum Treleasei
I tried to find succulents that all had the same watering needs-they are all drought tolerant and need well draining soil. To start, Thom placed a small plastic drain shield and some broken terra cotta pieces over the drain hole. This will aid in draining the soil well and the broken bits will keep the soil from pushing down and covering the drain hole.
We filled the pot with a cactus soil. We use Miracle Gro Cactus, Palm and Citrus Potting Mix. Thom placed the cacti where I wanted them. He used leather gloves to transplant the cactus with the super spiky, super hard spikes. After we had filled the pot we watered well. Every couple of weeks Thom will feed with a cactus food.
I’d love to turn this into a little succulent fairy garden but I haven’t found any fairy accessories that weren’t super cheesy. For now I placed a friendly cereamic owl stake to watch over things.
I had some leftover succulents so we arranged them in another pot and covered with some polished river rocks.
I’m super excited to have these out on the deck this summer. I’m trying to create a happy space to enjoy our morning coffee.
