I know what you’re thinking. We’ve all heard the whispers about glitter. About how it’s a certain “STD of the crafting world.” But it doesn’t have to be that at all. When handled in the correct manner, glitter is fun for all. I swear. Pinky promise. Lemme just get that fleck of glitter from your eyeball. Let’s just move on and make some glittered Christmas ornaments, shall we?
DIY Glittered Ornaments
Pick up an assortment of clear plastic ornaments, Polycrylic Protective Finish, & fine glitter (THIS is my absolute most favorite glitter ever!).
That’s right. Just three basic items to make these fun glittered ornaments is all you need.
Tips for DIY Glittered Ornaments
To make these DIY Glittered Ornaments even easier: pick up these additional supplies:
- These are helpful for getting glitter into the ornaments. I also use them for refillable glue bottles, sand crafts, micro-beading.
- My #1 tip for working with glitter is to always, always have these on hand.
- Drain the Polycrylic into these and let your bulbs sit on the rim upside down, if the ornaments are big enough. Otherwise, set them into empty egg cartons. They should drain completely so the excess does not pool.
- Transferring the Polycrylic is made easy with these. No messy rims, no mess on your craft table.
- Add more glitter than you think you need. The excess can go right back into the original container.
- Dry thoroughly before replacing the ornament lid (or screw top if you’re using that kind) and the hanger. This will prevent scraping off the glitter inside of the ornament.
I’ve only ever used the Polycrylic to make my DIY Glittered Ornaments. I’ve heard that people use a floor cleaner or floor polish to make them, but I’ve heard they have problems with the glitter flaking off.
My method (not that I came up with it, of course) lasts a long time. 4+ years and counting, is all I’m saying.
Want to watch me make these and see for yourself how EASY these DIY Glittered Ornaments are? There’s probably more tips in the video that I’m forgetting, so you should definitely watch. Plus, I’m funny, especially when provoked by glitter nay-sayers. Ha!
