In the 12+ years I’ve been vegetarian I’ve been so disappointed that I couldn’t take part in the fun Halloween Mummy Dog tradition. Back in the day, I loved a good hot dog. But since becoming vegetarian, I have found a delicious vegan alternative; Smart Dogs ® | Lightlife vegan hot dogs. I can’t believe it took me so long to realize I could eat fun Halloween foods. Thus, Vegetarian Mummy Dogs with Spicy Mustard Sauce were born.

We like spicy foods here at Cove Cottage so I threw together some recipes I had saved to come up with a spicy hot mustard sauce to enjoy with our vegetarian mummy dogs. Let’s make them, shall we?
Vegetarian Mummy Dogs with Spicy Mustard Sauce
Making the dogs is easy:
- Use regular hot dogs or use the vegan alternative.
- Open a tube of crescent rolls and unroll the dough.
- Fit two of the crescent rolls together to form a rectangle and pinch to seal.
- Slice rectangle of dough into strips.
- Wrap one strip per dog sealing the ends to the dough.
- Bake for 13-15 minutes at 350 degrees on an uncreased baking sheet.
Add dots of mustard when the mummy dogs have cooled just a bit.
For the sauce:
- 1/4 cup Dijon Mustard
- 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
- 1 minced garlic clove (I just use my garlic press)
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 2 teaspoons honey
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (can use less or more depending on your heat preference)
Mix all ingredients in a small bowl until well combined. I like my spicy mustard dipping sauce at room temp.
For a fun Halloween themed table, place the sauce into small plastic cups and set inside a cauldron.
You could also use ketchup & mustard or your favorite hot dog condiments.
These Vegetarian Mummy Dogs with Spicy Mustard are a perfect addition to any Halloween buffet. Or, serve them up to your hungry kids before they head out the door to trick-or-treat!
