My paternal grandmother must have known her time here on earth was limited. A couple years before her death and before I moved to Arkansas she began to weed through her belongings, packing them up, giving them away to family, donating them.
She gave me first dibs on all of it and while the reasoning was so sad to me I was thrilled to have those items from my grandma. I chose mostly kitchen related items-her good white {real} tupperware, the memories of her bringing brownies or cookies in them to family functions fresh in my mind, still. Bundt pans, and trivets, and her pastry blender-they’re all things I use today.
I also scooped up her little crocheted recipe book. I haven’t looked at it in years. I was thinking about it recently, though, feeling guilty about hoarding my grandmother’s treasure all to myself and so I pulled it out to try to figure out how I can share those recipes, my grandmother’s lovely handwriting, and the love that is held within those notecards. You see, many of my cousins were so young when grandma passed away. I had so much more time with her. I was the recipient of a lot of those meals cooked from the recipes within that book. I so want to share that with my younger cousins especially now that they’re getting married and starting families of their own-a generation that won’t ever know grandma personally.
I’m not quite sure how I will be sharing these with the girls. I’d like to make it more special than just photocopying the recipes. Initially, I’m thinking these recipe tea towels would be a good idea.

Sarah’s Project S.T.I.R. initiative is an excellent, excellent way to preserve family recipes. Sometimes a dish isn’t just about a recipe written down on paper. It could be about a technique only learned through teaching and repetition. It could be about feeling ingredients coming together, doughs being kneaded and shaped by hand, or nuances only picked up from instruction. Project S.T.I.R. is a way for Sarah to document these recipes in a way for future generations to hold onto them physically, mentally, emotionally.
