Over the weekend I started to post about some cute Halloween paper cocktail napkins I’ve been obsessed with lately. They were an impulse buy and totally unnecessary since we’re not hosting any parties and we don’t have many guests here at the Cove. I had to have them, though, and they look so cute next to the Halloween drinking glasses I pulled out of storage.
They’re cute but hard to photograph; they looked flat and one dimensional. Boring. And so I thought to myself: self, what do we have around the craft room that would make a good napkin holder? Being a good friend I answered myself: there’s that felt witch’s hat we’ve had laying around for ages just waiting for a project to star in.
And then, a Witch Hat Napkin Holder was born. It was easy {I LOVE easy} and I had all the supplies on hand.
Gather:
- Felt witch’s hat {I got mine from the Halloween section at Hobby Lobby}
- Green trim
- Black felt
- Chipboard or card board
- Spray adhesive
- Scissor
Trace the triangular point of the hat onto two chipboard pieces and cut out. Cover chipboard triangles with black felt {one side only}. Here’s my handy little tip for covering the edges {I’m all about the details, friends}.
Set aside the covered and trimmed felt triangles.
Prepare the witches hat by cutting down the center along the sewn seam. The point will now have two sides.
Get one of your triangles now and spray the chipboard side with adhesive and stick it to the inside of the witches hat.
*Tip* Bend the triangle to the curve of the hat.
Repeat with second triangle on the other side of the hat.
Next, add the chipboard circle for stability.
- Trace the perimeter of the circle using the hat as a guide.
Cut out the circle just about 1/4 inch larger than the traced outline. - Spray one side of the circle with adhesive and stick to the outside of the hat.
- Not shown: Cut out a circle of black felt and glue that to the circle inside of the hat. The chipboard circle should still be sticky.
- Finally, glue another black felt circle to the bottom of the hat to cover the chipboard circle.
To finish: spray one side of the green trim with the adhesive and add to both sides of the hat.
And, you’re done! Quick and easy!
Here’s the side view. The chipboard triangles and bottom circle make the hat sturdy.
