I’m excited about today’s A Month of Pumpkin guest poster. Sarah is a crafter, knitting expert, and a published author. I’ve been lucky enough to be able to connect with her through #ARWB and she is someone I continue to look up to for crafting inspiration and motivation {this lady gets a lot accomplished during a week!}. Thank you, Sarah for sharing your fun pumpkin ideas!
Hi there! I’m Sarah from Our Daily Craft. I got to meet Gina briefly at Arkansas Women Bloggers Unplugged last year, and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know her a little better through her blog and connecting online.
When she put out the call for pumpkin-related posts I jumped at the chance to share a few really easy ideas for decorating artificial (or real, for that matter) pumpkins. I picked mine up at Target, but this time of year you can find them almost anywhere.
I decided to show three different ways to cover a pumpkin that you can do with items you have at home or can easily get. Even if you’re not particularly crafty these are projects you can manage in a small amount of time and that will look great year after year.
Duct Tape Pumpkin
My buddy Kellee gave me this roll of gold Duck Tape that she got from the company’s booth at BlissDom. I’d been saving it up for a special project, and I think my gilded pumpkin is really fun.
All it takes is some tape of your choice — Duck Tape comes in just about any color or pattern you can imagine — a pumpkin and about five minutes. The first couple of pieces I put on I wrapped all the way around the pumpkin, then filled in the rest with smaller pieces until it was all covered.
Yarn-Covered Pumpkin
I’m a professional yarn crafter, so there’s always a bit of extra yarn floating around my house. This bulky red yarn was left over from a recent project, but you can use yarn of any color or thickness. Don’t have yarn handy? Try twine.
Start at the top. Draw out a bit of plain old white glue and put the yarn on top, winding it around the pumpkin, working down as you go. It’s best to glue all the way around to keep the yarn firmly in place.
I love the look of a solid color pumpkin, but I think it would also be fun to do stripes or combine yarns of different textures (or even yarn and twine) for a different look.
Newspaper-Covered Pumpkin
Finally, I couldn’t resist doing a bit of decoupage. You could do this with pages from an old book — old sheet music would be really cool, too — but I just used newspaper and think it turned out great.
Rip up the newspaper and grab some Mod Podge (you can also use thinned-out glue) and a foam brush. Paint a little glue on the pumpkin, add some paper and paint more glue on top. Continue to layer the paper on, overlapping as you go, until the whole pumpkin is covered. Allow to dry.
If I had some orange spray paint, I might just gently spritz the top to add back a touch of color, but I like it like this, too.
Do you have an ideas for decorating artificial pumpkins? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for letting me visit, Gina!
