Welcome to day one of our virtual dinner party! I’m kicking it off today with a quick table setting decor item. Stick with me til the end for a surprise-okay, I can’t keep a secret. There’s a giveaway. Arkansas based companies Microplane and Argenta Market have graciously donated two great prize packages. More on that later.
Let’s get on to the dinner party. Are you familiar with progressive dinner parties? They’re a super easy way to have a multiple course meal where each course is served at a different location. For example, today I’m talking about place settings. Later, Debbie will cook up some appetizers, the side dishes and cocktails will be at another location, Julie will serve up the main dish at her place, and finally, we’ll have dessert with Anita. The same idea can be put it into effect in a real-life progressive dinner party. Fun? Most definitely.
A great way to tie each location together is by using some of the same materials at each location. Today, I’ve crafted up some fabric flower place settings. Later in the dinner party, you’ll see the same fabrics in different locations being used differently.
When I think Southern Summer Nights, I imagine a dinner table with the fancy china, real silverware, and the fancy wine glasses. Any true Southern lady would also have flowers on the table and her nicest vintage jewelry on display. Why not combine those two for a sweet Southern place setting?
Fabric flower brooch place settings will direct our guests to their places at the dinner table and can also serve as a favor for them to take home.
The supply list is quite short and most likely you’ll have all on hand. If not, they’re fairly easy to find at any flea market or antique stores.
You’ll need:
- six fabric circles about 3-4 inches in diameter
- needle and thread {about 10 inches long}
- vintage brooch or earrings {I’ve used an earring here-just use pliers to take off the hinged part}
- hot glue gun
- various materials to make name tags {I used scrap ribbon and stamps}
The How-To:
- Step One- lay two of the fabric circles atop one another, set aside.
- Step Two- take a third fabric circle and fold in half.
- Step Three-now fold that circle into fourths. It should look like a nice little triangular petal.
- Step Four-using your needle & thread, tack that petal into place on the center of your two flat circles of fabric. Just push the needle and thread through 2 or 3 times to hold the petals in place. Repeat this step for the remaining circles of fabric. You should have four petals sewn on.
- Step Five-run the needle through the back of the fabric flower to scrunch it up and give the petals some dimension.
- Step Six-Stamp or write the guests’ names on ribbon or paper.
- Step Seven-Using your glue gun, attach both the ribbon and the brooch or earring to the fabric flower.
That’s it! You’re ready to set your table and invite your guests to join you for dinner {or as they say here in the South-Supper}.
{I’m still working on collecting all those fancy dishes for a real Southern-looking table scape}
Wait! There’s more: Join these ladies over at their places for the rest of the Southern Summer Nights meal.
