I’m busy preparing for a trip home to {Michigan} this week. I’m so geeked to get back to my second hometown-I say second because I actually grew up in a small town called Ravenna and then I moved to the bustling metropolis {slight sarcasm} of Muskegon in my late twenties.
I have such fond memories of my time there. It was my first apartment alone {only time I lived alone, actually} and I lived there for four and a half years. I struggled to pay the rent and there was barely any groceries, ever, in my refrigerator. Luckily, my parents lived close and I was always welcomed for dinner and most times I’d leave with a twenty dollar bill placed lovingly into my palm by my sweet mom.
It’s also where Thom and I started our relationship. I went from being a Single Girl in the City to one half of a couple. We made my sparse apartment a home; I fell in love with not only Thom, but with his cooking and awesome lattes. I shared my hometown with him. I gave him my heart there. It was in that exposed ceiling-brick walled apartment, missing Thom after he had left and returned to Arkansas after a two month stay, that I decided to do something bold and move to Arkansas.
My apartment was in an old converted building that once housed the Amazon Knitting Company in the historical section of downtown Muskegon.
On days off when I wasn’t helping my parents at the campground they managed on the shores of Lake Michigan, I would walk to the library from my apartment and then come back to my block and sit in the garden across from my building.
Next door was the old Union Depot building. I’ve always dreamed of having our wedding here.
Another fun day-off adventure: riding the trolley around Muskegon with stops at Pere Marquette or even local ice creams stops.
These are just a few of my favorite Muskegon memories; memories I’m hoping to relive on this next journey home. I’ll be sharing more these next few days and into next week as I make my way back.
Thanks for letting an old sentimental gal reminisce, friends.
