It’s been rather quiet around here lately. Thom was gone for eleven days leaving me alone here at the Cove. I have a whole other post in the works about how I fill my time whilst without his company. He is home now and rested from his trip.
Shortly after he returned I left for a couple of days for work. I traveled south to El Dorado, Arkansas. It was an interesting experience. El Dorado is a poor town, from what I have seen. There were many people who showed up to our mass hire who had been without work for as long as a couple of years. It was heartbreaking when one applicant was asked why he had shown up for the mass hire despite not having neither any retail experience nor a desire to work in a store such as ours and his answer was that it was the only job listing in the local newspaper. I didn’t pick up a paper to confirm this but it was still pretty sad.
Hot summer temps have found their way to the Cove. It was 100 degrees here today. And usually, it’s cooler here at the lake than anywhere else. We’re staying inside with the air on most of the time.
Yesterday, I attempted to perfect my pie-making skills at the request of Thom. I’m happy to report I’m getting much better at pie-crust making!
I’m just twelve days away from trip home to {Michigan}! I have a to-do list a mile long for while I’m home-mostly wedding related stuff I’m hoping to take care of {finding a venue, thrifting for vintage plates, etc.}.
Hmmmm….that’s about it for goings-on around the Cove {except to say there are now two owls hooting simultaneously in the mornings when I leave for work. It really is a lovely sound and makes getting out and locking the gate behind me much more pleasant-and something to look forward to}.
So, how sweet is your summer, friends? What are you up to?

Pretty neat you have two owls hooting at the same time! Is that blackberry pie? It looks yummy! I really like the owl drawing on the plate.

I hear nothing makes a better pie crust than pork lard but you either have to make your own or search for it and make sure you don't get one that is hydrogenated. Your pie looks excellent by the way!! I am headed to Ravenna next week for the fourth!

Your pie looks amazing! Wish I had a piece right now ;). And cute, cute plate! Did you make it or buy it?
Your trip sounds fun! I adore buying wedding idea magazines…..and I've been married five years-haha. I just love a good event to dream about!
Blessings. 🙂

If you're interested I will 🙂 I'm a total novice at pie crust making. Practice makes perfect though, right?

It's a cherry pie 🙂 I cheated, though, and used frozen cherries because I was in a hurry to get a pie made for Thom and didn't want to get the pits out of the fresh ones.

Ewwww…lard. Yea. My grandma used lard when I was a kid and I have to say her crusts pretty much rocked. Have a great time in Ravenna. I'll be missing you by just a couple of days :(.

Thank you, Sara! I bought the cute owl plates at TJ Maxx. They came in a set of 5 or 6 with a little stand. I love them, too.
I've been putting off wedding planning so I'm excited to get back into it again! I'm SUCH a procrastinator!!
