I don’t remember a lot of my childhood. For whatever reason, I can’t recall much before I turned 15. I’ve been thinking lately that I need to record whatever few memories I do have. My mom’s older brother, my Uncle Mike, has been on my mind lately. For instance: why do my cousins and I call him Uncle Mike {his middle name is Michael} when his first name is John and his brother and sisters all called him that? Who started Mike? Was it easier than John? These are the thoughts that float into mind as sleep approaches.
Five random memories of Uncle Mike:
|It should also be noted that Uncle Mike was my first real reader here at this old blog…even before my mom, I think-so, thanks for that UM!!|
1. Big Reds. When I think of Big Red football Uncle Mike is the first thing that comes to mind. I went to Friday night games with him when I was little an it was so much fun.
2. Lionel Ritchie. Uncle Mike introduced us. If I haven’t mentioned it before, Lionel Ritchie was my first husband {a story for another time}. I’m not sure if this memory is real or not…but it’s sweet, so I like to think that it is: Uncle Mike plays Lionel’s debut album, which was back in 1983 {I would have been 8?9?} and we’re dancing. When one of the slower songs comes on-I’m holding Uncle Mike’s hands and standing on his feet while we dance. Real memory ?
3. Time to make the donuts. He worked for Dunkin’ Donuts for 30 years? Best. Donut. Maker. ever. I went on to be a donut maker myself for a short period of time {not at Dunkin’ Donuts} but my donuts looked so bad they only let me frost them-hahaha.
4. Only guy ever allowed at Girl’s Night parties. He was a riot. And funny.
5. Creator of Naked Wednesday. If you’re a friend of mine on Facebook you’ll often see my “Happy Naked Wednesday!” posts. Back when he was a house husband, he joked that Wednesdays were his naked days. Sadly, I don’t think they exist anymore because he went back to school and is now a teacher during the day. I’m sure his neighbors don’t think that’s sad. hahaha…Just kidding, Uncle Mike!

What a fun collection of memories. Uncle Mike sounds like a pretty special guy. It's funny the associations we have with certain people — foods, music, memories. (And I need to hear the Lionel Ritchie story!)
