According to the Share Our Strength website, 16 million kids live in homes that struggle with poverty. They don’t get enough to eat. Their parents lack the knowledge of how to make ends meet while providing nutritional meals for their families and as a result, these children don’t do well in school or in life. 16 million sounds like a lot, right? But there’s a lot of people in the world. Maybe this number will hit home a bit harder: 1 in 5. One in five kids is hungry. One out of five kids goes to bad at night with a rumbly tummy and wakes the next morning to little or no breakfast and starts the day on a bad note.
No Kid Hungry is a national campaign to end childhood hunger. How can it do this? By providing the opportunity for children to have access to programs at school that provide breakfasts and may even provide meals when school is not in session. The campaign also funds programs like Cooking Matters-classes that teach parents how to shop strategically to make their dollars go further, how to cook nutritional meals, and how to make better food choices.
Something else the No Kid Hungry campaign does? It brings together communities, like food bloggers, to take action against childhood hunger. I’m proud to be a part of one such community here in Arkansas {even if I’m not a totally legit food blogger}.
On May 4th, I’ll once again be a part of the Arkansas Food Blogger Bake Sale in support of No Kid Hungry.
Although, now that I’m thinking about it I’m a little nervous thinking about the professional bakers that’ll be there with their professional looking and awesome tasting baked goods. Hmmm. Intimidated much?
I hope you’ll join us!
When: May 4th 9am-2pm
Where: 7th and Main, adjacent to the Argenta Certified Arkansas Farmer’s Market in North Little Rock
