The road trip included a tiny little detour into Oklahoma- a realization that came into being only after passing a “Welcome to Arkansas” sign {it was short, Oklahoma..but sweet and I hope to see you again!}.
The town of Fort Smith was lovely, and charming, and filled with historical significance. We arrived late in the afternoon after many of the places of interest had closed for the evening. It was okay though. The sites were deserted and quiet…perfect for browsing at our leisure. The sun sat low in the sky casting a golden light over the Fort.
The Park at West End sat at the western edge of town and included a lovely, regal 1930s Ferris Wheel that was featured in the 1935 World’s Fair at San Diego. For just a dollar a ride you can enjoy the view of Fort Smith from above {sadly, it was only open on the weekends and our day trip happened on a Thursday}.
These are the moments I want to remember: Moments of togetherness. Moments of feeling completely free of appointments and obligations. I want to remember the lovely breeze, the golden sunlight, the feeling of discovering a new place, and learning about the history of that place and recording my own time and existence within a new history.
