Last weekend was spent preparing for & canning our haul of jalepenos from the container garden. I had a Ball, literally, picking out canning jars {shopping is always the most fun part!} and accoutrements.
I chose the Ball Canning Discovery Kit because I have a large spaghetti pot I could use for the water bath but no racks for the inside. And, since the rack was expensive and actually bigger than my pot, the kit was more economical and worked with what I already owned. Also, since we didn’t have a huge batch of jalepenos to can, the small, fitted lifter was convenient and it was green-and geniuses choose green, so it was a given that I had to have it.
I tend to be more of a “jump right in and just do it” kind of gal, but luckily I live with someone a bit more prepared {and slightly germaphobic} so there was a little bit of preparation involved. Here’s what we gathered:
- A handy Water Bath Cheat Sheet with a list of supplies needed and steps to prepare.
- National Center for Home Food Preservation for recommendations and methods of food preservation.
- A collective group of gardeners and foodies dedicated to home preservation.
- A celebration of Summer’s bounty with National Can-It-Forward Day day, happening all over the US on August 13th.
How fun would a canning party be?
