The World Championship Cardboard Boat Races are held annually in Heber Springs on beautiful Greers Ferry Lake.
Before I’d met Thom, I had never heard of cardboard boat races. Who would have thought that one could build a functioning boat out of paper supplies? Not me. But! It can be done.
Cardboard Boat Races
Thom and I headed down to the Dam Site Rec Area for the 22nd annual World Championship Cardboard Boat Race. The weather was perfect today…although it was quite warm. The Dam site is a really pretty place. We watched the boaters from an island {it’s actually connected to the rec area by a narrow concrete walkway}. The lake was full of boats and swimmers and it was fun watching kids jump off these bluffs. Fun to watch and not do, for this girl anyway.
I had so much fun cheering on the boats. It was especially fun watching the kids enjoy themselves and the crafts they spent so much time making.
My fave part of the day was the last event: the Demolition Derby. The teams raced at each other ramming into one another and tried to sink each other’s boats. It was all in good fun, of course!
There were some amazing boats and even more amazing was the teamwork shown by everyone involved. I could hardly believe they were made out of cardboard. This is probably one of the best things I’ve seen and enjoyed since I’ve been in Heber Springs.
For more information on the World Championship Cardboard Boat Races, see this article I wrote for First Security Bank’s Only in Ark blog: Heber Springs Cardboard Boat Races. I also include what international magazine published my cardboard boat races picture in their magazine. So fun, right?
We’d love to see you at the races in Heber!
